Welcome To South Kingstown

For decades now, residents and vistors have been coming to South Kingstown to enjoy the unspoiled beauty of our shoreline, the quiet tansquility of our rural farmlands, and the quaint charm of our historic villages. It is no surprise that our Town has grown at a faster pace than all other Rhode Island communities over the last twenty years - a fact that underscores the desirablity of our community as a place to live and work.

The Town has a unique combination of environmental and recreational attractions including more than 10 miles of breathtaking and undisturbed beaches and an extensive system of parks and play fields. Additionally, the Town has nearly 11,000 acres of protected open space, representing more than 30% of our 57 square mile land area - a number that has increased significantly over the past five years, ensuring that the pristine natural resources of South Kingstown will not be compromised in the future. Our Parks and Recreation Department, Senior Services Center, and Wastewater Treatment Facility all have received national recognition for the outstanding services they provide. The Town is also home to the University of Rhode Island which offers a wide array of educational and cultural programs and athletic events to our townspeople.

We are a community where residents take great pride in maintaining and preserving the quality of life we all enjoy. As can be readily imagined, this effort requires enthusiastic and active participation of dedicated elected and appointed officials as well as concerning citizens in addressing the issue of the day and planning for our future. We are fortunate to have a strong volunteer spirit among our residents whose creativity, talents, and energy contribute immensely to a vital and healthy community.

We hope you enjoy your visit to South Kingstown.

Stephen A. Alfred
Town Manager

The site of the deadly Great Swamp Fight during King Phillip's War in 1675 is located in South Kingstown.

South Kingstown's School district is made up of eight public schools. There is one preschool, four elementary schools, two middle schools, and one high school. There are two private schools in South Kingstown, Monsignor Matthew F. Clarke Elementary/Middle School and the Prout School.

Public school students are assigned to attend one of the four elementary schools based on where they live. The schools are Wakefield Elementary, Matunuck Elementary, Peace Dale Elementary and West Kingstown Elementary. There was a fifth school, South Road Elementary, but it was closed (due to budget reform) in 2005. Middle school students are divided between Curtis Corner Middle School and Broad Rock Middle School.

All students of South Kingstown attend South Kingstown High School for grades 9-12. South Kingstown High School has been noted for excellence in academics, athletics and the arts. Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Interpreter of Maladies and The Namesake Jhumpa Lahiri attended South Kingstown High School.

South Kingstown High School is the home of the Rebels, the back to back football champions.

The South Kingstown Music Department consists of various vocal and instrumental groups, all of which have been recognized in national competitions. The most well-known group is eSKape, the music department's selective jazz vocal ensemble. Under the direction of Dianne Rebelo (February 15, 1955- July 4, 2008), eSKape has placed 1st and 2nd in its respective category in the past five years at the Berklee College of Music Jazz Festival, one of the most respected and competitive school music competitions in the United States.

In spring of 2008, South Kingstown's Theater Department placed second in the Rhode Island High School Drama Festival, moving on to the New England Drama Festival in Rutland, Vermont.
